Stony Brook University Director of Institutional Research Planning & Effectiveness in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Ten (10) years of full-time experience in institutional research, higher education research, analytics in higher education or closely related experience. Five (5) years of full-time experience directly managing analysts, programmers, or similar staff in a higher education setting. Strong analytical and data management skills, with proficiency in statistical software and database management. Knowledge of higher education policies, accreditation processes, and compliance regulations.Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent). Experience reporting data to IPEDS. Experience with data governance. Professional experience at an AAU institution. Professional activity in institutional research, assessment, analytics, or related discipline, including publications, presentations, and/or professional service.Brief Description of Duties:
The Director leads the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness at Stony Brook University by providing strategic leadership in data analysis, reporting, and research to support the University's decision-making, strategic planning, and policy development process.Duties:

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the institutional research, planning & effectiveness functions to advance the University's mission and goals.
    • Implement artificial intelligence, machine learning and automated processes with reliable and trusted procedures for ensuring ethical, accurate and usable data products.
  • Data Management and Analysis:
    • Oversee the collection, compilation, interpretive analysis, and accurate communication of institutional and contextual data.
    • Manage the University's data governance program, including staff dedicated to data governance, data quality, and data management.
    • Ensure data, queries, reports, and other materials are properly documented, replicable, and meet highest standards for quality and reliability.
    • Oversee the management of the university's official census data resources, including data sets for students, financial aid, academic programs, courses, and employees.
  • Reporting and Compliance:
    • Lead the preparation of mandatory reports and surveys for government, regulatory bodies, and publications. These include IPEDS, the State of New York, the SUNY system, rankings publications, AAUDE, and other requestors.
    • Respond to internal and external requests for information from university stakeholders.
  • Research and Evaluation:
    • Conduct research on various aspects of the University's operations, including student success, faculty productivity, and program effectiveness. These projects include complex statistical analyses of planning, organizational, developmental and/or financial data as well as writing reports and making presentations about research findings to senior leaders and other constituencies.
  • Policy and Planning Support:
    • Prepare enrollment projections, capacity and growth models, and policy analyses to support university planning and development.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Collaborate with various departments and stakeholders across the University to support data needs and promote a culture of data-informed decision-making.
    • Represent the University at system and professional meetings, including AAU Data Exchange, SUNY-AIRPO, the Association for Institutional Research, and others.
  • Team Leadership and Development:
    • Supervise and mentor a team of research, data analysis, and data governance professionals.
    • Ensure staff members are successful, productive, and accountable for producing highest quality work.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
