FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position performs a variety of preventative maintenance and repair tasks on FSDB facilities and various equipment.

  • Repairs, maintains, and performs preventative maintenance on electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, paint, concrete/roadway, groundskeeping, pressure washing, and other mechanical equipment. Performs preventative maintenance and repair duties on other equipment as assigned.

  • Assists various trades as needed under the discretion of Assistant Director of Facilities. Works with supervision to plan and execute repairs. Communicates progression and status of project to supervisor.

  • Maintains accurate records of attendance and work orders by documenting all reports.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Persons appointed to this position must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during demanding situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow co-workers;

  • Ability to work in all types of weather; Ability to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday;

  • Knowledge and skills to safely use shop machines, power tools and hand tools; Knowledge of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and mechanical techniques as well as concrete/roadway, groundskeeping and pressure washing skills;

  • Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures;

  • Ability and skill to safely lift various objects when necessary;

  • Ability to follow safety procedures and directives;

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions;

  • Ability to keep records;

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments;

  • Ability to read and work from blue prints, drawings and schematics;

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;

  • Skills required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to document and maintain productive and non-productive hours;

  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing or electrical or mechanical equipment; or

    • Vocational/technical training in mechanical repair or one of the building trades can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for a year by year basis

    Sign Language Requirements

    Applicants who are selected for hire will be encouraged to learn American Sign Language.

    Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

    Hiring Salary Range 12 month position: $33,850.96 - $38,350.96 annually. (paid biweekly over 26-pays) This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

    Hours Monday-Friday 7:30am – 3:30pm
