The University of Maine Presque Isle is seeking a broadly-trained historian or political scientist for an academic-year, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of History and Political Science. The University of Maine Presque Isle recently established a B.A. in History and Political Science in a competency-based modality offered alongside traditional in-person and online modalities, which include a range of courses in history and political science. The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated record of teaching and research/professional development in the broad areas of history or political science. The candidate should have the ability to grow an exciting and innovative undergraduate academic program and to help build capacity within this program. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper-level courses in history and political science, which may include American Government, United States History and World Civilization surveys, and upper-level courses in Constitutional Law and Environmental Policy. Teaching load will be a mix of traditional in-person, traditional online, and competency-based modalities. Teaching responsibilities and modalities will depend upon the needs of the College. The position is located at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, but distance delivery modalities may be assigned as determined necessary by the College chair and Academic Dean.

Responsibilities include:

  • 24 contact hours of teaching per year which may include traditional fall and spring offerings in addition to summer courses;

  • Advising; service to the department, university and community;

  • Research/publications, conference presentations, or other professional development activities in area(s) of expertise.

  • Advising history and political science students and serving on 1-2 campus committees is expected, including Early College/Dual Enrollment.

    The work schedule will be variable based upon the teaching schedule and research demands. Work beyond regular hours (which may include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the salary range is $57,806 - $62,500 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan.     Qualifications:

    Required:

  • PHD (or ABD) in history, political science, or relevant field (Ph.D to be completed within two years following hire).

  • Demonstrated successful experience in teaching introductory and/or upper-level history or political science courses.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate with the campus, local, and regional communities.

  • Demonstrated experience or ability to employ high impact teaching practices, multiple forms of formative and summative assessment, and technology that qualitatively improves the learning experience, including on-line teaching methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage in research/publication, conference presentations, or other professional development activities in area(s) of expertise.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

    Preferred:

  • 3+ years teaching in history or political science at the collegiate level in various delivery modalities, including upper-level courses.

  • Experience instructing within a competency-based program or modality
