Position Overview

As a Staff Engineer in the HVDC Engineering team, you will support the engineering and construction of cutting-edge long-distance interregional HVDC transmission projects. You will be a key contributor in establishing a strategy for planning, designing, and operating gigawatt-scale renewable infrastructure projects. You will be primarily supporting the HVDC converter stations and associated AC switchyards, with focus on managing conceptual project designs, electrical studies, functional specifications, and the detailed design, construction, and commissioning of these projects. Projects are located nationwide with various challenges that will provide you with opportunities to collaborate with experts in development, interconnections, renewable engineering, construction, and operations. Transmission systems for these projects will utilize advanced technologies , focus on increasing the reach of low-cost renewable energy, and enhance grid reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design:

  • Develop HVDC project designs and specifications that comply with all critical owner and interconnection requirements.

  • Conduct thorough design reviews of physical and electrical drawings, with support of internal and external expert specialists.

  • Define the scope of required power systems studies/calculations and conduct thorough reviews of such for accuracy and compliance.

  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary experts in development, construction, civil engineering, and operations to ensure comprehensive optimization of project design.

  • Track design schedules, update stakeholders, and ensure that critical dates related to engineering tasks are met on time.

  • Support project close out by organizing and transferring as-built documentation to the final project owner including physical and electrical drawings, schematics, bill of materials, engineering studies/calculations, and control and protection settings.

  • Procurement and Construction Support:

  • Develop technical exhibits and specifications for project tenders and support the bid process through response to clarifications and review of technical conformance.

  • Review competitive bids for owner procured HVDC converter stations, transmission and substation equipment, and other electrical balance-of-plant material. Support the purchasing of this equipment and manage suppliers throughout the engineering and commissioning process.

  • Attend in-person coordination meetings with Independent System Operators (ISOs), interconnection utilities, HVDC equipment suppliers and constructors, and consulting engineers.

  • Monitor construction progress both remotely and via on-site inspections and support resolution of any field issues. Attend on-site meetings with electrical construction contractors and equipment suppliers.

  • Perform factory/equipment inspection and witness factory acceptance testing for major HVDC converter station equipment.

  • Engineering Group Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing project specific engineering, equipment, and construction specifications.

  • Prepare and validate power systems studies related to steady state, short circuit, dynamic and electromagnetic transient analysis.

  • Coordinate with HVDC vendors and renewable energy original equipment manufacturers (e.g. Wind Turbine Generators, Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems) related to power systems studies for HVDC projects.

  • Coordinate with independent engineers and project partners to effectively navigate the technical due diligence process.

  • Assist in the development of new projects by analyzing conceptual designs and Requests for Proposal (RFP) specifications.

  • Support early-stage HVDC transmission development by providing support related choice of Point of Interconnection (POI) and helping interconnection and grid analysis team with HVDC modeling using PSS/E and/or PSCAD.

  • Coordinate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons learned into new design reviews and specifications to continuously improve quality.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through various training sessions and conferences.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering from an accredited college/university (preferably Electrical, Power Systems).

  • 0 - 2+ years of professional experience, either through an internship or full-time position

  • Knowledge of power systems or renewable generation.

  • Proficient with the use of computers and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to travel occasionally, if needed (up to 25%).

  • Current driver’s license.

  • Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.

    Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering

  • 2+ years of professional experience, either through an internship or full-time position.

  • Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

  • Basic understanding of HVDC and power electronics principles of operation and applications in power systems.

  • General knowledge of interpreting and applying common industry standards and codes.

  • Ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.

  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus with commitment to quality and accuracy.

  • Strong organization and planning skills with the ability to manage tasks across multiple projects.

  • Strong communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements and provide recommendations.

  • Proficient knowledge of PSS/E, PSCAD, and ASPEN simulation software and its use in power systems studies.

  • Experience with EHV/HV electrical infrastructure (substations/switchyards, distribution systems, transmission lines, transformers. etc.).
