Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Summary This position is for a Supervisory MIT of the Sleep Medicine Center, who functions to plan, direct and coordinate patient care related to the Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT) program, Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) program and to the Sleep Laboratory, and to ensure continuity and quality of care of these patients by integrating the operations of these programs into the Sleep Clinic operations; integrates all functional data into the patient care flows. Responsibilities Main duties, skills and abilities required, but not limited to: Performs patient physical assessments related to sleep disorders, including mask fittings and adjustments, etc. Conducts patient setups, calibration and acquisition performance verification; performs pre and post-test calibrations. Monitoring ofmultiple physiological data throughout the specific tests conducted (night or day polysomnographic studies, MSLTs, MWTs, actigraphy, HSATs, PVT, driving simulator, etc). Troubleshoots polysomnographic or HSAT recording equipment, ensures all HIT programs (e.g., HL-7 software) are monitored and troubleshot promptly on a daily basis. Removes, and sterilizes electrodes and sensors at completion of study, as needed; orders necessary supplies and equipment for the HSAT program, etc. Performs timely sleep staging of the sleep studies according to the latest professional standards and specific VA Sleep Medicine Center protocols, generates reports for physician interpretations, assists physicians and trainees in insuring quality standards of the sleep reports are maintained. Documents all data in CPRS as needed, including the data generated through scoring. Monitors secure messages, CPRs alerts or other communication channels for prompt, bidirectional flow of information for all Sleep Medicine personnel, directing to the responsible person to solve any problems related to these systems. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the testing system and accepted procedures. Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications, card or cloud downloads, etc) to verify results. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly. Generates specific notes and orders from the work area into the computer system and for the editing and verification of the results Utilizes proficiently CPRS, Vista, Vista WebNista Imaging, sleep software and remote data capabilities to view and retrieve information on patients evaluated in the Sleep Lab, PAP clinics or with HSAT equipment. Understands oximetry readings for the purpose of reporting physiological findings as related to sleep disorders and ensure the appropriate interface between PAP and supplemental oxygen is used and explained to the patients. Explains to the patients the functionality of HST devices, how to have them attached and turned on/off, retrieves the equipment and becomes proficient in downloading data from the HST and is able to generate specific HST reports. Advanced knowledge of the servo-ventilation, VAPS or other special home ventilation devices for initiation, troubleshooting, and therapy of patients with various conditions. Advanced knowledge of sleep scoring rules, portable or home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) equipment and technologies, in-lab and/or ambulatory sleep study reports. Shows knowledge of Joint Commission (JC) and American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) regulatory requirements and standards; assists in the process of JC and/or AASM accreditation process, as needed. At least 5 years of experience in the field of polysomnography. Must be reliable, able to work independently and be self-motivated. Work Schedule: Monday-Saturday-determined by needs of service (7:30 pm - 7:30 am) Compressed/Flexible: Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) GS-10 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex polysomnography technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Certification. Registration by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Supervisory Polysomnographic Technician. Individuals at this level plan and direct programs at affiliated medical centers and satellite outpatient clinics and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of non-supervisory personnel and at least one subordinate team leader or supervisor. Typically these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff resolving problems which may interfere with patient examination or treatment; providing polysomnography technician services in more complex and non-standard cases; evaluating new products and equipment and making recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations; participating as an instructor in the facility's clinical training program; making final decisions on selections based on recommendations from subordinate supervisors or leads; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs.
